LIFE WITHOUT HUMANS
ROOM INSTILLATIONÂ
2020
Group project with Calvin Wang, Alana Koscove, and Anya Edelstein
Our installation aimed to provoke thoughts of what lives on in the absence of humans, in light of climate related crisis. Inspired by a saltwater aquarium which teemed with the life of algae, copepods, crustaceans, and Tanaidacea long after the only intended inhabitants, sea urchins, had died. Accompanied by footage of aerial views of rivers running through the squares of mono-crop farms, plants and animal life at the Chernobyl nuclear site, deep sea marine life, and close ups of the abandoned aquatic tank; as well as kelp and sprouting radishes hanging in viewer's paths. The human hand and natural forces are both present in the room and in direct conflict with one another. The result was a calming and immersive space to appreciate the complexities of various natural ecosystems in tension with human interference.
